about PURPLE

PURPLE is a space where books, exhibitions, events and people meet and create new forms of expression.

We hope our plural community will be a place for everyone in Kyoto.

PURPLE is located southeast of Nijojo Castle, in the district called Shikiami-cho, where the Jishu sect of Japanese Buddhism built the Shikiami dojo for rituals and ceremonies in the Kamakura period. Performers and entertainers called ami-shu came from all over the land and gathered there, making it a cultural mecca of its time.
